Started on Aug 27, 2021, it included dredging of the dock basin and the channels, sunken vessel salvage, installation of the meteorological station, reconstruction of the ramps, and installation of navigation aid facilities.

It is a key project under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative. The water depth of the channel at the port has been deepened to 16 meters. Together with the expansion project of the wharf, the port is now available for 24/7 berthing of 70,000-metric-ton ships, and has an improved capacity in ship handling and comprehensive services.

Located on the West Bank of the Indian Ocean, the Port of Dar es Salaam is a major support to Tanzania’s economic growth and a key logistics center and trade hub of East Africa.

Completion of the dredging project greatly improved infrastructure construction of the port and is expected to enhance its overall cargo transportation capacity and competitiveness. It will also play a key role in improving opening-up of Tanzania and East Africa and boosting economic development in neighboring countries.
