Firefly & Starry Sky Concert Lights Up Huairou, Beijing, Enriching Summer Family Getaways
Beijing’s Huairou District has recently hosted a Firefly & Starry Sky Concert to diversify summer cultural tourism offerings and meet growing demand for family‑friendly leisure experiences. The event features starry‑sky performances, science popularisation workshops, intangible cultural heritage (ICH) handicraft sessions and national‑trend market stalls, delivering a new “mini‑vacation” experience for families.
Held as a supporting programme of the 2026 Beijing Huairou National‑Trend Culture Season, the concert includes live band shows, dedicated firefly viewing zones, science exploration areas and themed experience zones. Specially designed interactive spots such as a magic camp, a “flying goose task force” and a plant hydration station engage young visitors. Children observe fireflies up close, create handcrafts like bean‑pod dolls and nut‑shell rattles using natural materials, and interact with scientist NPCs, blending play with learning amid idyllic rural scenery and summer romance.

Visitors praise the immersive blend of nature and art. The serene setting allows children to connect with nature while enjoying live music. The interplay of starry skies, live melodies and glowing fireflies creates a magical atmosphere, appealing to both children and adults.
At the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences (UCAS) Doctoral Farm, educational programmes highlight the links between firefly ecology, scientific research, education, tourism and environmental protection. Participants learn about firefly conservation in the wild and their application in landscape design. Fireflies serve as sensitive bioindicators, thriving only in well‑preserved ecosystems. Plans are in place to integrate firefly cultivation with the farm’s operations, establish a firefly ecological reserve, advance sustainable agriculture and expand cultural tourism formats.
The event underscores Huairou’s focus on eco‑friendly and family‑centred tourism. By combining natural ecology, scientific outreach and cultural creativity, the district enhances its summer tourism appeal and supports the growth of responsible, experience‑driven travel.
