Full Rural Road Hardening Unlocks Rural Vitality in Yunnan’s Fuyuan

Fuyuan County in eastern Yunnan’s Wumeng Mountainous area has achieved full hardened road coverage for all natural villages with more than 30 households in 2026, completing the final phase of its rural road upgrading project. The full 100 percent connectivity rate closes the last-mile gap in urban-rural integration and lays a solid infrastructure foundation for sustained rural revitalisation across the region.

For years, the county’s rugged terrain and scattered rural settlements have restricted local travel and industrial growth. Narrow muddy trails suffered from severe dust in dry weather and muddy surfaces in rainy seasons, hindering daily commutes, logistics transportation and industrial development. Road congestion and poor traffic conditions once posed major obstacles to rural economic expansion and livelihood improvement in remote mountain villages.

The county has prioritised rural road construction as a key livelihood project, advancing high-quality rural road development in line with national rural road upgrading policies. Local authorities have integrated resources from transportation, finance and rural revitalisation sectors, set up dedicated working teams, and adopted rigorous management over construction quality, safety and progress to deliver standardised and durable rural road infrastructure.

Villagers have actively participated in the road upgrading initiative. In Habo Village of Yingshang Town, residents voluntarily donated funds and land to support road renovation. Multiple rounds of public fundraising have supported road widening and hardening works, with all occupied land offered voluntarily without compensation. Community participation has effectively accelerated project implementation and lowered construction costs.

Large-scale construction is underway across multiple townships. The rural road hardening project in Shudi Village of Housuo Town covers five natural villages with a total length of 4.42 kilometres. Construction teams seize fine weather windows to advance foundation consolidation and concrete pouring, with subgrade works fully completed and pavement construction in steady progress. All projects will be finished before the rainy season to ensure stable and safe road operation.

According to local transportation authorities, Fuyuan launched 34 rural road hardening projects in 2025, covering a total mileage of 114.03 kilometres across 12 townships and sub-districts. By May 25, 2026, 22 bidding projects spanning 75.15 kilometres had been initiated, with two finished sections covering 7.2 kilometres and 12 ongoing projects extending 40.66 kilometres.

The comprehensive upgrade of rural road networks delivers far-reaching benefits for grassroots development. The interconnected county, township and village road system greatly improves travel safety and convenience for mountain residents. Smooth transportation channels boost the outbound delivery of local specialties including walnuts, konjac and Chinese medicinal herbs, expanding farmers’ income sources.

Improved infrastructure also fuels the growth of rural tourism and e-commerce, optimising rural living environments and injecting continuous vitality into industrial upgrading. The upgraded rural transportation network underpins balanced urban-rural development and enables sustainable economic and social progress in mountainous areas.
