Rural Tourism Flourishes in Anhui’s Jiagou Town as Agritourism Integration Advances
Xinhua News Agency reports that in early May, the countryside of Jiagou Town, Yongqiao District, Suzhou City, Anhui Province, has become a favoured destination for urban visitors seeking a tranquil rural getaway.
Surrounded by reservoirs and wooded hills, Jiagou Town has capitalised on its pristine natural environment to develop a vibrant rural tourism sector. The area now features a distinctive rural library, high-quality homestays and village coffee shops, creating a unique blend of cultural leisure and countryside charm.
At the heart of this transformation stands the Paddy Field Library in Zhentou Village. Opened in May 2025, the 400-square-metre structure features reddish-brown walls and large glass windows, harmonising perfectly with the surrounding rice fields. Since its launch, it has received over 180,000 visitors, with a single-day peak of 4,000 people.

More than a traditional library, it operates as a cultural space combining reading, coffee and creative products. Its signature rice milk latte, made from local fragrant rice, has sold over 400,000 cups, while rural-themed souvenirs have proven popular with visitors. The library has become a landmark cultural venue, blending the aroma of books, rice and coffee in an immersive rural experience.
Complementing these attractions, the town has upgraded its rural road network. The improved roads have made scenic routes easily accessible, allowing tourists to drive through picturesque landscapes. On May 13, drone footage captured visitors enjoying self-driving tours along the Caochang Road, which winds through lush fields and hills.
This focus on infrastructure and cultural amenities forms part of a broader strategy to integrate agriculture, culture and tourism. The "culture + aesthetics + industry" model has revitalised the rural economy, with the library alone boosting local catering and rice production industries. Over 100 households have increased their incomes through tourism-related businesses, while village collective revenue has grown significantly.
Looking ahead, Jiagou Town will continue to refine its agritourism offerings. Plans include expanding the Paddy Field Library’s cultural events, further improving homestay services and developing more creative products. By preserving its rural character while embracing modern amenities, the town is establishing itself as a model for sustainable rural revitalisation in China.
