Gardening Beyond Fields: China’s Planting Consumption Shifts to Refinement and Diversification
Gone are the days when planting was confined to farmlands. From blooming flowers adorning windowsills in spring to green plants adding vitality in winter, gardening has evolved beyond traditional rural scenes, with balcony planting and home gardening becoming popular ways for people to relieve stress and enrich daily life. Meanwhile, rural planting has bid farewell to extensive models, moving towards refinement and convenience, reflecting Chinese consumers’ pursuit of a better life.
The growing trend of flower appreciation has driven a rapid increase in the consumption of ornamental plants. Freesia leads the way with a 469% surge in turnover, followed by peony and willow catkin with 397% and 296% growth respectively. Hippeastrum and daffodil also stand out with 266% and 182% increases in turnover. Once niche ornamental plants have now become "visual highlights," replacing some traditional green plants as new consumer favorites.
Segmented categories show distinct highlights, with more diverse consumer demands. In the potted green plant market, orchids and phalaenopsis lead with a 10% share of turnover, while classic varieties such as Chinese rose, rose and green radish remain popular. Among bulbous flowers, tulips are most favored by consumers, accounting for 28% of turnover; hippeastrum and lily also attract attention for their easy maintenance and long flowering period. In terms of fruit and vegetable seedling consumption, blueberry and cherry seedlings hold the leading share. A growing number of "urban new farmers" are keen to build "mini orchards" on their balconies, enjoying the pleasure of "from branch to tongue," which highlights the fashion, fun and ornamental value of balcony planting.

Convenience and professionalism have become the core demands for planting tools and equipment. As consumers’ enthusiasm for planting grows, supporting tools have ushered in a consumption boom, with safe, worry-free and practical gardening supplies becoming the best "partners" for planting. From the consumer side, to reduce the hard work of planting, people are more willing to buy convenient equipment such as branch shredders, electric garden pruners and leaf blowers. Intelligent planting equipment designed for beginners and "lazy people" is also gaining increasing popularity. From the production side, to meet consumers’ pursuit of refined plant maintenance, agricultural materials enterprises have successively laid out small and micro gardening products, extending from large-area operations to home scenarios, China Economic Net reported.
Regional differences in consumption are obvious, with consumers in northern and southern China having different preferences. Data shows that Guangdong, Sichuan and Jiangsu provinces account for a high proportion of turnover in agricultural and gardening products, and consumers in these three regions have a particular preference for flowers and green plants. Qinghai and Liaoning provinces have seen rapid growth in the turnover of agricultural and gardening products, with continuous release of planting consumption potential, Economic Daily noted.
It is evident from the data that planting consumption is shifting from "extensive" to "refined." Both the popular balcony planting and the convenient upgrading of rural planting reflect consumers’ yearning for a better life. With the continuous enrichment of planting scenarios, the upgrading of planting tools and the continuous release of regional consumption potential, this "joy of cultivation" will continue to heat up, driving the planting consumption market to embrace broader development space and allowing more people to harvest the beauty of nature in a small space.
