Unmanned Rice Transplanters Boost Smart Spring Farming in Hunan’s Dongting Lake Area

As spring farming progresses across China, early rice transplanting has commenced in numerous regions alongside the Dongting Lake in Hunan Province. According to Xinhua News Agency, multiple unmanned rice transplanters are operating continuously in Nanzhou Town, Nan County, Yiyang City, demonstrating China’s advancing smart agricultural technologies.

These state-of-the-art unmanned transplanters are equipped with real-time positioning and intelligent path-planning systems. Working with high precision along pre-set routes, they eliminate the need for on-board operators, requiring only manual assistance for seedling tray replenishment. This technological advancement significantly reduces labour demands while enhancing the standardisation and efficiency of transplanting operations, facilitating more systematic subsequent field management.

The adoption of unmanned farming equipment in Hunan reflects broader national trends in agricultural modernisation. Supported by Beidou Navigation Satellite System and artificial intelligence algorithms, these machines ensure uniform planting depth and consistent row spacing, markedly improving crop establishment quality.

Local agricultural authorities have been actively promoting smart farming solutions. Similar unmanned technologies were successfully demonstrated during last year’s "Smart Spring Farming" observation event in Nan County, with technical guidance from academician teams of South China Agricultural University and Huazhong Agricultural University.

This technological shift is part of China’s wider push to develop new quality productive forces in agriculture. The integration of digital technologies with traditional farming is enhancing productivity across the country, with agricultural science and technology contributions exceeding 64% nationwide.
