Rail Passenger Records Broken Across Shenzhen as Dragon Boat Festival Travel Surges
Official traffic figures released by Shenzhen railway authorities on 20 June confirm that passenger volumes hit unprecedented highs on 19 June, the main day of the Dragon Boat Festival break, with multiple daily metrics setting new all-time benchmarks.
Total passenger departures from all Shenzhen railway stations stood at 561,800 on 19 June, marking a 14.44 per cent year-on-year uptick. Guangmingcheng Station registered 8,300 departures and 8,900 arrivals, bringing combined inbound and outbound footfall to 17,200; each of these three readings represents a station record. Shenzhen Pingshan Station also posted a historic single-day departure tally of 25,300 travellers.
Station waiting halls across the city saw dense crowds of holiday travellers as rail operators rolled out pre-planned capacity expansions to manage the travel rush. A total of 1,069 passenger services ran on 19 June, incorporating 107 extra trains laid on to ease congestion.

Shenzhen North Station supplemented its regular timetable with 54 overnight high-speed rail connections, covering popular routes to Guangzhou, Nanning, Xiamen and other regional hubs, catering to travellers with flexible departure schedules spread across the day and night.
At half past nine in the morning on 19 June, a cultural event themed Warm Journeys, Zongzi for Dragon Boat Festival unfolded beside the Winter Jasmine Service Counter within Shenzhen North Station’s main concourse. Young railway staff opened proceedings with a gentle vocal performance, drawing crowds of waiting passengers who paused to tap along to the melody or capture the moment on mobile devices. Travellers shared positive impressions of the impromptu cultural offering, noting the festive touch brought warmth to their transit ahead of long-distance trips.
A full roster of interactive activities followed the opening performance, including classic poetry quizzes, renditions of the track Blue and White Porcelain, family origin tracing sessions and custom Dragon Boat Festival bookmark carving. Visitors took part in verse recitals, explored displays detailing ancient Chinese surname lineages and created personalised printed bookmarks, sustaining a gentle, convivial atmosphere throughout the event.
Frontline railway staff deliver tailored support for vulnerable travellers, while nearly sixty young volunteers were stationed at entry gates, waiting areas and service counters to deliver directions and travel advice. The Winter Jasmine Service Team organises all on-site passenger assistance and cultural programming at the major transport hub, curating cultural activities to infuse holiday spirit into transit journeys.
Rail operators have issued guidance for student travellers planning upcoming trips. Anyone holding discounted student rail fares must complete qualification verification ahead of arrival to avoid delays when boarding services.
Additional passenger support measures remain in place for all travellers using Shenzhen’s rail network over the holiday period, with extended service hours and extra on-site personnel retained to maintain smooth journeys in the days ahead.
