Handan: Where Idioms Meet Tai Chi in a Cultural Tourism Boom

Handan, Hebei – Visitors wander the Handan Road Historical and Cultural Block, savouring the charm of Chinese idioms and exploring ancient heritage. This ancient city, known as the “Capital of Chinese Idioms”, has turned its rich linguistic legacy and Tai Chi tradition into a thriving tourism draw.

This May Day holiday, Handan launched an innovative “One Shirt, All Benefits” campaign. A single idiom‑themed T‑shirt granted holders discounted or free entry to attractions including the Northern Dynasties Culture Museum and Guangfu Ancient City, alongside reduced rates for accommodation, dining, cultural merchandise and transport.

According to local research, no fewer than 2,006 idioms originate from or are linked to Handan. In recent years, the city has integrated idiom culture deeply into tourism. Idiom‑themed bus routes traverse urban streets, while idiom‑inspired banquets and snacks delight diners. Cultural products such as idiom silk books and bronze tea sets prove popular with visitors.

Idioms in Handan are not only seen and admired but also heard and experienced. A comedy theatre, the first of its kind in Hebei within the block, opened last July. Young performers blend idioms such as Returning the Jade Intact and Riding in Hu Attire into comic dialogue, making traditional culture entertaining. New offerings include “comedy ticket + idiom gift bag” packages and idiom shadow puppet shows, attracting younger audiences.

Handan is building a distinctive idiom IP across multiple formats. Short dramas, interactive children’s shows, national idiom ceremonies and international exchange events have been introduced. An “Idiom Street” and themed study tours embed idioms into landscapes and attractions through games, performances and creative products, turning the city into a living museum.

If idioms form Handan’s cultural “voice”, Tai Chi defines its “movement”. The newly opened Handan Tai Chi Cultural Exchange Centre serves as a landmark for exhibitions, wellness and education. Joint initiatives across Yongnian, Guangping, Jize and Qiu Counties include the “Fun Handan · Tai Chi Adventure” programme. New experiences such as Tai Chi competitions and robot demonstrations merge tradition with technology.

Handan has positioned “idioms + Tai Chi” as the twin engines of its all‑for‑one tourism strategy. The city has developed “two zones and three belts”: red ecological, Warring States cultural, Northern Dynasties cultural, Tai Chi cultural and Grand Canal cultural corridors. In 2024 and 2025, Handan received over 100 million visitors annually. This May Day alone, it welcomed 10.34 million tourists with total spending of 7.66 billion yuan, rises of 35.61% and 36.56% year‑on‑year, earning a place in Ctrip’s Top 10 Deep Cultural Tourism Destinations in China.

The city will continue to explore local cultural resources and develop a full chain of creative products, films and performances to enhance its “idioms + Tai Chi” brand.
