Ancient Blossoms Power Integrated Rural Tourism Upgrade in Hebei’s Qinglong
The blooming of rare ancient trees and immersive cultural events are driving a comprehensive upgrade of rural tourism in Qinglong Manchu Autonomous County, north China’s Hebei Province. The 23rd Zushan Magnolia Festival officially kicked off on May 30 at Zushan Scenic Area, featuring one month of themed activities that transform traditional flower-viewing tourism into an integrated experiential, consumption-driven rural travel model.
Endemic to Zushan Mountain, over 4,000 wild Tiannu magnolia trees, known as living plant fossils dating back to the Quaternary glacial period, enter full bloom in early summer. The elegant white blossoms dot the lush mountain landscape, paired with fresh mountain fragrance and sea of clouds, forming a distinctive natural scenery unique to the region.
Unlike previous single-focused flower appreciation events, this year’s festival integrates intangible cultural heritage performances, immersive interactive experiences and local consumption scenarios. Manchu folk operas, magnolia-themed dances and traditional folk shows are staged across scenic spots. The newly launched floral deity parade offers interactive blessings and red ribbon gifts, creating an ancient-style fairyland atmosphere and greatly enhancing tourist engagement. National-style model displays on mountain trails further enrich the on-site cultural experience.

The upgraded tourism model has brought remarkable improvements in travel data. Tourists’ average stay duration has risen sharply from 3.2 hours last year to 6.5 hours. Local homestay occupancy rates and rural market consumption have seen substantial growth, with the mountain-themed market recording an average daily turnover of over 80,000 yuan.
Local authorities have extended the industrial chain to eliminate the previous half-day sightseeing dilemma. The mountain foot market gathers more than 20 local enterprises and cooperatives, offering mountain specialties, grain products and characteristic snacks. Live-streaming promotions help local agricultural goods reach broader consumer markets nationwide. A one-stop digital reservation system connects market consumption with homestays and farmhouse catering services, driving pre-season homestay occupancy to 70 percent, far exceeding historical levels for the same period.
Digital empowerment optimizes the overall travel experience. Co-launched with Alibaba Public Welfare and Amap, the intelligent tourism platform enables one-stop services including route planning, scenic spot introduction, accommodation booking and specialty purchasing. Remote cloud sightseeing and post-tour online shopping channels also support sustained product repurchases, forming a complete offline experience and online re-consumption industrial loop.
Qinglong is building a year-round all-for-one tourism system to solve the seasonal imbalance of rural tourism. The local area arranges a series of seasonal festivals, including spring pear blossom tours, early summer magnolia experiences, midsummer chestnut flower activities and autumn harvest celebrations. Winter ice and snow projects and folk cultural experiences complement seasonal tourism, maintaining stable industrial vitality throughout the year.
By linking ecological resources, intangible cultural heritage inheritance, digital services and characteristic agriculture, the county has built a whole-industry chain covering sightseeing, in-depth experience, on-site consumption and long-term repurchase. The continuous optimisation of rural tourism formats supports local employment and income growth, enabling ecological resources to deliver sustainable economic benefits for rural development.
