Grey Herons Thrive at Breeding Ground by Poyang Lake as Nesting Season Begins
According to Jiangxi Daily news, on 8 April, hundreds of grey herons have settled in the breeding and conservation base at Daziju Village, Sushan Township, Duchang County, Jiujiang City, beside Poyang Lake in Jiangxi Province. Lush woodland provides ideal shelter for these summer migratory birds, creating a vibrant ecological scene as nesting and breeding get fully under way.

Groups of grey herons can be seen standing quietly among leafy branches, gliding gracefully through the air, or carrying twigs to build and repair nests. Their elegant silhouettes stand out against the expansive waters of Poyang Lake, forming a lively natural picture that highlights the improving wetland ecology in the region.
As a key international wetland and important migratory bird stopover along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, Poyang Lake has seen consistent improvements to its habitat in recent years. Local authorities have strengthened wetland protection, restored riverine woodland, and implemented strict conservation measures to reduce human disturbance. These efforts have turned Daziju Village into a stable and favoured breeding site for grey herons.
The annual return of grey herons marks the start of the busy breeding period. Local wildlife monitoring staff noted that the number of herons arriving this year remains stable, with healthy nesting activity across the reserve. The harmonious coexistence of the birds and the lake demonstrates the effectiveness of long-term wetland conservation and biodiversity protection work in Jiangxi.
The thriving grey heron colony has also become a popular spot for birdwatchers and nature photographers, drawing visitors to appreciate the tranquil beauty of wildlife in its natural habitat while supporting low-impact ecotourism around Poyang Lake.
