Spring Consumption Warms Up, Injecting Vitality into China’s High-Quality Economic Development
As spring brings warm breezes and all things revive, consumption vitality in China is accelerating its release. Spring products are neatly displayed in supermarkets, customer flow in catering stores is gradually increasing, and demand for cultural, tourism and leisure activities is picking up, with various consumption scenarios recovering steadily. The "spring economy" is warming gently, injecting vigorous vitality into the high-quality development of regional economies.
The spring economy plays a dual role in boosting consumption growth, expanding both the scale and quality of consumption. It directly stimulates related industries such as cultural tourism, retail and transportation, effectively releasing residents’ consumption potential through leverage such as consumption coupons. Meanwhile, it drives supply-side structural reform, promotes the upgrading of physical consumption to experience and emotional consumption, and accelerates the rooting of county economies and new quality productive forces.
Cultural and tourism consumption has taken the lead in entering a boom period. Data shows that since March, the search popularity of keywords such as "spring outing", "flower viewing" and "spring travel" has surged by 380% month-on-month. Driven by strong travel demand, tens of thousands of seasonal spring tourism services have been selling well, with spring-limited tourism products featuring high-quality experiences and strong IP attributes performing particularly strongly.

In addition to the cultural and tourism boom, the offline retail market has also ushered in a peak season for seasonal clothing consumption. A field visit to shopping malls in Chaoyang District, Beijing, found that various spring clothing such as fresh shirts, floral dresses and casual light jackets have been fully put on shelves, seizing the core positions of the stores. Many stores have launched promotional activities such as spring clothing discounts, full reductions and free gifts to accurately stimulate consumption demand, driving the continuous rise of offline clothing consumption.
The catering consumption sector is also full of spring vitality, with the custom of "eating spring" driving the spring economy to heat up at the dining table. Since mid-March, the search volume related to "spring vegetables" nationwide has increased by 17.4% year-on-year. Driven by the demand for "spring tasting", the popularity of seasonal catering has risen, with the search volume of "spring vegetable porridge", "stir-fried spring vegetables" and "spring vegetable rice" increasing by 85.4%, 91.9% and 108.9% year-on-year respectively.
Meanwhile, "the first cup of tea in spring" has become a new consumption trend pursued by young people. Mixue Ice Cream & Tea has launched 4 new spring-limited products in stores nationwide, while Hushan Aunt has upgraded its soft-boiled cassava milk, both gaining wide popularity among consumers with their distinctive tastes.
To seize the golden window of spring consumption, major e-commerce platforms and physical merchants have actively deployed, launching spring-themed promotional activities and spring-limited products. Relevant departments in various regions have also taken action: Chongqing is carrying out a spring consumption season with more than 300 themed activities, Guangdong is promoting six key routes connecting 30 flower viewing spots, and Hubei has launched flower viewing tourism products in 295 scenic spots.
Supporting services have kept pace. Fujian has carefully launched 10 flower viewing routes, with railway departments adding "flower viewing high-speed trains" connecting 10 cities. Tianjin has opened free custom bus routes to popular scenic spots, making spring outings more convenient and comfortable.
The spring economy has bid farewell to a single "flowering period traffic", showing four characteristics: in-depth experience, stratified groups, industrial integration and long-term operation. New quality consumption scenarios such as NFT digital flower exhibitions and robot cultural tourism have emerged, promoting the transformation of short-term traffic into long-term IP throughout the year. Efforts are being made to further tap consumption potential and convert the romance of the season into tangible economic dividends.
