National New Energy Vehicle Power Battery Traceability Platform Launches to Boost Circular Development

BEIJING, 1 April – China’s National New Energy Vehicle Power Battery Traceability Information Platform officially went live on 1 April, delivering a state-level digital backbone to underpin the green and circular development of the country’s new energy vehicle (NEV) industry.

Built around the digital identity of individual power batteries, the platform assigns a unique code to every battery unit and integrates real-time data across the entire industrial chain, from upstream manufacturing to downstream recycling and disposal. This end-to-end coding system enables full chain traceability of battery flows, closing information gaps and enhancing transparency throughout the lifecycle of NEV power batteries.

According to information from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the platform serves as a unified national infrastructure for battery lifecycle supervision. It standardises data submission and tracking protocols for battery producers, vehicle manufacturers, maintenance providers and recycling enterprises, laying a solid institutional and technical foundation for regulated reuse and resource recovery.

Wang Pan, chief expert at China Automotive Technology and Research Center Co., Ltd., noted that the platform turns each power battery into a uniquely identifiable asset with verifiable digital records. By consolidating cross-sector data flows, the system strengthens regulatory oversight while supporting enterprises in fulfilling extended producer responsibility obligations.

The launch marks a key step in China’s drive to build a closed-loop NEV battery ecosystem. It improves operational efficiency in recycling networks, reduces environmental risks from improper disposal, and supports the long-term sustainable growth of the NEV sector.
