Guangzhu Power Cuts Emissions Below National Limits in Green Overhaul

Guangzhu Power, a Zhuhai-based generator supplying electricity to Zhuhai, Zhongshan and Jiangmen, has brought its air pollutant concentrations below China’s ultra-low emission thresholds after a series of environmental upgrades dating back to 2006, according to the Guangdong Provincial State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission website.

Average concentrations of particulate matter, sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxides now stand at 2, 15 and 38 milligrams per standard cubic metre respectively, the commission said. China’s ultra-low emission standard for coal-fired units caps those three pollutants at 10, 35 and 50 milligrams per cubic metre. The utility says its figures are comparable to those of natural gas-fired generating units. On an annual basis, the reductions amount to about 400,000 tonnes of particulate matter, 25,000 tonnes of sulphur dioxide and 18,000 tonnes of nitrogen oxides, equivalent to the exhaust emissions of several hundred thousand petrol-fuelled private cars over a year.

The improvements follow the successive installation of wet flue-gas desulphurisation, electrostatic-fabric dust removal, flue-gas denitrification, desulphurisation capacity expansion, staged economiser modification and ultra-low emission retrofits, the same source said.

At its coal terminal, Guangzhu Power has commissioned shore-power facilities for vessels, which the commission said would cut carbon dioxide by about 370 tonnes, sulphur dioxide by 4.7 tonnes and nitrogen oxides by 4.7 tonnes annually, an effect comparable to the yearly carbon uptake of roughly 20,000 trees. The plant has also completed a zero-liquid-discharge retrofit for desulphurisation wastewater; treated industrial wastewater is reused for coal-yard spraying and trestle washing, while fly ash, bottom ash and gypsum are fully utilised.

The utility has expanded low-pressure heat supply from its cogeneration units to industrial parks in the surrounding area, supporting clustered industrial development. In the Huangmaohai sea area, it has released about 43.06 million high-quality fish and shrimp fry since January 2026, and has planted nearly 300 seedlings over the past three years across a green area of about 200,000 square metres on its site.

Guangzhu Power said it will continue to pursue technological innovation and refine management measures, with the aim of maintaining its position as a clean, efficient and low-carbon coal-fired generator.
