Songzhu Pumping Station Tops Out for Guangdong’s Beibu Gulf Water Diversion Scheme

According to the Guangdong Provincial State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission, the main structure of the pump house at Songzhu Pumping Station was completed on 27 September. The facility forms part of the Guangdong Beibu Gulf Water Resources Allocation Project, and it is the first pumping station on the whole route to reach structural topping, marking a key milestone in construction.

Financed, built and operated by Guangdong Hai Holding Group, the scheme is a core national water network project stretching roughly 490 kilometres. Five booster pumping stations are arranged along the alignment, delivering a strategic infrastructure solution to rebalance water resources across western Guangdong and ease local water shortages.

Songzhu Pumping Station sits in Songzhu Town, Leizhou, Zhanjiang, occupying a land area of 64.5 mu. It is fitted with seven horizontal centrifugal pumps with a total installed capacity of 22.05 megawatts. Its designed pumping head stands at 78 metres, with a rated conveyance flow of 13 cubic metres per second.

Once commissioned, the station will pressurise water diverted from the Xijiang River and deliver supplies to the whole area south of the Nanhe River. The build fills long-standing gaps in local water transmission, and underpins regional rural revitalisation, industrial upgrading and ecological conservation.

Total investment committed to the project to date reaches 23.8 billion yuan. Tunnel excavation has advanced 224 kilometres, while pipeline installation covers 200 kilometres. When fully operational, the water network will connect 12 reservoirs along the corridor and supply more than 18 million residents across Yunfu, Yangjiang, Maoming and Zhanjiang.
