PetroChina discovers new deep‑coal‑bed‑methane field holding over 100 bcm reserves in Ordos Basin
According to China National Petroleum Corporation, fresh proven geological reserves exceeding 100 billion cubic metres of coal‑bed methane have been confirmed in the Sanjiao‑North Block near Lüliang, Shanxi. The discovery marks major progress for domestic deep coal‑bed‑methane exploration and development, reinforcing national energy security.
Deep coal‑bed methane refers to gas resources contained in coal seams lying deeper than 1 500 metres below ground. Situated on the eastern flank of the Ordos Basin, the Sanjiao‑North Block boasts a continuous gas‑bearing area of 411.5 square kilometres. Coal seams within this zone sit between 1 900 metres and 2 150 metres beneath the surface, making it a representative deep coal‑bed‑methane resource zone.

PetroChina Coalbed Methane Company has developed five core technological solutions including geology‑engineering integrated guidance technology. A complete working system covering well‑drilling, hydraulic fracturing and well commissioning has been established. Following the new find, the total state‑filed proven deep coal‑bed‑methane reserves within the Ordos Basin have surpassed 400 billion cubic metres.
