Provincial‑owned Firms in Shandong Advance Clean Coal‑to‑chemical Upgrading

Coal functions both as a major energy source and a valuable industrial feedstock. Responding to demands for the low‑carbon transition of traditional fossil‑fuel sectors, provincial‑owned enterprises across Shandong have stepped up work on clean and high‑efficiency coal utilisation. Continuous technical upgrades help extend and refine coal‑based chemical industrial chains, transforming coal from a simple fuel into premium chemical and new‑energy materials.

Shandong Energy Lunan Chemical has expanded downstream processing and improved its coal‑to‑chemical industrial framework. The enterprise has built out a complete industrial pathway running from raw coal feedstock right through to finished textile materials, enabling deep intensive processing of coal resources. Using advanced coal‑gasification technology, raw coal is converted into methanol and other basic chemical feed‑stocks. These outputs undergo further processing to yield olefins and caprolactam as intermediate goods, before polymerisation and spinning produce high‑grade textile raw materials.

The installation of a 3,000‑tonne‑per‑day OMB pressurised pulverised‑coal gasifier underpins efficiency gains along the chain. Concentrations of effective synthesis gas remain steadily above 92 per cent, with carbon conversion exceeding 99 per cent. Compared with the preceding generation of coal‑water‑slurry gasification technology, the new unit cuts coal consumption by more than 10 per cent and oxygen consumption by over 15 per cent. It delivers tangible progress in cost control, energy conservation and cleaner coal processing.

At Hualu‑Hengsheng, an in‑house clean coal‑gasification platform supports its flexible multi‑production scheme known as “one feed, multiple product lines”. Production layouts can be dynamically adjusted in response to shifts in market supply and demand. The firm now manufactures more than 40 varieties of chemical products, broadening its business scope from basic fertilisers and conventional chemicals into new‑energy and advanced‑material segments.

Its high‑grade electrolyte solvents including dimethyl carbonate and methyl ethyl carbonate serve the battery‑storage and power‑battery industrial networks. Graded production of Nylon 6 covers film‑grade, fibre‑grade and engineering‑plastic‑grade specifications for end‑uses such as BOPA films, premium carpets and micro‑fibre goods, lifting overall product value.

Sustained technological innovation supports the company’s low‑carbon operational performance. Hualu‑Hengsheng has secured the national industrial energy‑efficiency “leader” recognition for thirteen consecutive years. In July 2026, a project on the development and industrial deployment of large‑scale low‑pressure synthetic‑ammonia catalytic systems, in which the enterprise participated, was awarded second prize at the 2025 State Scientific and Technological Progress Awards. This proven technology has been rolled‑out on more than 150 domestic synthetic‑ammonia facilities.

Technical advances are reshaping the traditional coal‑related industry as it shifts from fuel‑only usage to diversified material production. Shandong provincial‑owned enterprises will keep increasing investment in research and development to push coal‑related industrial chains towards higher‑end, intelligent and low‑carbon development.
