Main‑works Commence at Lingbao Pumped‑storage Project in Henan

On 30 August, main‑construction works officially got underway for the Lingbao pumped‑storage power station in Henan Province, an investment project developed by China Huadian. The milestone signals the scheme’s entry into full‑scale implementation.

Located in Zhuyang Town, Lingbao City, under Sanmenxia in western Henan, the facility will house four 300‑megawatt single‑stage vertical‑shaft mixed‑flow reversible units, delivering a total installed capacity of 1 200 megawatts. Its units can sustain six consecutive hours of full‑load generation, with projected annual output standing at 1.589 billion kilowatt‑hours. Once commissioned, the station will deliver peak‑shaving, valley‑filling, energy‑storage, frequency‑regulation, phase‑modulation and emergency back‑up services for the western Henan power grid, supporting the low‑carbon transition of regional energy supplies.

China Huadian has secured investment approvals and initiated main‑works construction for multiple key pumped‑storage schemes across the country throughout the current year. The 1 200‑megawatt Xixingchong pumped‑storage project in Anhui saw its main phase start in March 2026, designed to match fast‑growing power‑regulation requirements driven by expanding computing‑capacity infrastructure around Wuhu. In June 2026, main‑construction kicked off for the 1 200‑megawatt Yongchang pumped‑storage facility in Gansu, which will substantially improve integration of wind and solar output from the Hexi Corridor new‑energy base.

Two further projects are lined up to break ground within the current calendar year. The 1 400‑megawatt Niushoushan‑East scheme in Ningxia and the 1 800‑megawatt Jingyu project in Jilin are poised to start construction. Upon completion, both will facilitate effective consumption and large‑scale outward transmission of locally‑generated renewable power.

Civil‑engineering activities will proceed in phases at the Lingbao site, with construction workflows aligned to engineering timelines. Parallel preparatory work will advance for the Ningxia and Jilin projects, as national pumped‑storage capacity keeps expanding to accommodate rising volumes of variable renewable generation.
