China’s E‑commerce Posts Steady Growth in January‑July, Boosting Consumption and Industrial Upgrading

According to CCTV‑News reports citing information from China’s Ministry of Commerce, e‑commerce in China has maintained steady and innovative development across the first seven months of the year.

Integration between online and offline retail channels has unlocked fresh consumption potential. Nationwide online retail sales of goods and services rose by 4.8 per cent year‑on‑year over January‑July, contributing more than half of the total growth in aggregate retail turnover for goods and services.

Digital platforms broaden the scope of commodity consumption while improving accessibility for service‑oriented spending. On major e‑commerce platforms monitored by the ministry, sales for online travel services increased by 24.9 per cent, and online lifestyle service turnover grew by 16.3 per cent in the same seven‑month period.

Digital commerce is also driving transformation across real‑economy sectors. Business big‑data monitoring records a 12.8 per cent rise in online retail sales of agricultural produce, alongside a 5 per cent increase in online sales of rural commodities.

Local authorities foster the “e‑commerce plus industrial cluster” model, arranging links between digital trading platforms and specialised manufacturing hubs. Industrial e‑commerce transaction volumes for manufactured goods climbed 1.4 per cent, while those for chemical products edged up 1.2 per cent.

Online shopping and digital‑content‑related industries further fuel expansion within supporting service sectors.
