Sinopec’s Chuanwei Chemical Opens 50,000-Tonne Special PVA Unit, Creating World’s Largest Single-site High-grade PVA Production Hub

According to Xinhua News Agency, a new production unit with an annual output of 50,000 tonnes of special polyvinyl alcohol resin has achieved successful commissioning at Chuanwei Chemical under Sinopec, with qualified products rolling off production lines and the first batch of cargo shipped to European markets.

Following the launch of this facility, Chuanwei Chemical’s total annual PVA production capacity stands at 210,000 tonnes, establishing the site as the world’s largest standalone manufacturing base dedicated to high-end PVA materials. The operation of the new unit will strengthen domestic self-sufficiency across pivotal industrial chains including photovoltaic manufacturing, consumer electronics and optical film production.

Polyvinyl alcohol is a fully biodegradable water-soluble polymer material, deployed across high-value sectors such as textiles, construction, photovoltaic equipment, electronics and pharmaceutical manufacturing. High-grade variants of PVA deliver high light transmittance and structural stability, making them indispensable raw materials for optical polarisers and safety glass for transport vehicles. Prior to the development of domestic mass production capacity, China’s supply of optical-grade and pharmaceutical-grade high-end PVA relied heavily on overseas imports.

The newly built unit adopts self-developed alcoholysis and precision purification processes to produce high-specification PVA matching international quality benchmarks, closing domestic supply gaps for premium polymer feedstocks and reinforcing risk resilience across upstream industrial chains. 

Engineering teams resolved multiple technical hurdles throughout construction, including precise temperature regulation and consistent product quality control. Updated polymerisation technology boosts the unit’s output capacity by 40 per cent compared with older generation equipment. 

Four sets of waste gas and wastewater recycling infrastructure have been installed alongside automated intelligent packaging systems, delivering integrated upgrades covering high-end manufacturing, digital operation and low-carbon production.

The site has completed 17 months of construction work with robust safety management protocols in place. Further optimisation of process parameters will continue to stabilise long-term continuous production of specialty PVA grades. Additional export arrangements will be finalised to deliver consistent shipments to European industrial buyers, while expanded domestic supply will serve local manufacturers of new energy and electronic components. Ongoing technical iteration will broaden the range of customised PVA formulations available to industrial clients across global markets.
