Heilongjiang delivers tangible results in cold-region saline-alkali land improvement and farmland upgrading

Heilongjiang Provincial Agricultural Investment Group has advanced high-quality agricultural development throughout the year by prioritising black soil protection, comprehensive saline-alkali land utilisation and the cultivation of new quality productive forces in agriculture. Targeted upgrading and renovation of cold-region saline-alkali plots have unlocked idle arable land potential, stabilised grain output and consolidated regional food security foundations with solid practical outcomes.

Large-scale standardised improvement projects have revitalised substantial idle farmland resources across the province. The agricultural entity has completed systematic renovation covering 20,000 mu of saline-alkali land through zoned and precise treatment. Soil physical and chemical properties in key renovation zones including Nianyugou and Toutai have been significantly optimised, with soil organic matter content rising by 0.2 percentage points and overall crop yields increasing by more than 10 percent.

Major productivity growth has been achieved in low and medium-yield saline-alkali paddy fields in Zhaoyuan. The local saline-alkali paddy fields previously yielded between 275 and 325 kilograms per mu. Ongoing upgrading has lifted per mu output by 225 kilograms, while newly reclaimed saline-alkali paddy fields have reached a yield level of 509 kilograms per mu. Large-scale renovation has transformed barren saline land into high-yield and stable-production farmland and boosted economic returns for specialised crop planting.

Tailored technical systems and replicable industrial standards have been established to address the unique challenges of cold-region saline-alkali land, which is prone to degradation and difficult to manage sustainably. Practical project operations have accumulated complete local governance models specifically adapted to typical crater-shaped saline land in Heilongjiang. Integrated technical solutions including subsurface pipe desalination, ecological willow slope protection and deep tillage soil improvement have been widely applied.

A standardised operational workflow covering soil testing, targeted treatment and long-term maintenance has been fully implemented, forming a mature technical framework suitable for northern cold-region black soil protection and renovation. Relevant agricultural subsidiaries have led the compilation of industrial standards for whole-process engineering consultation on high-standard farmland construction and participated in formulating provincial technical specifications for fluid solidified soil filling, providing standardised references for large-scale regional promotion.

A full-life-cycle closed-loop management mechanism has been established to sustain upgraded farmland quality. Dynamic soil monitoring, regular water conservancy facility inspections and traceable project quality management systems effectively prevent saline-alkali regression and land degradation. Key renovation areas including Zhaoyuan, Erlongshan, Baoqing and Youfeng have maintained stable and efficient agricultural production after systematic upgrading.

Nearly 50,000 mu of farmland in Baoqing has completed soil fertility improvement, steadily lifting comprehensive agricultural production capacity in the region. Continuous optimisation of technical systems and long-term maintenance mechanisms will further empower black soil resource protection, modern agricultural transformation and stable grain production capacity across Heilongjiang.
