Hubei Jiangling Power Plant fully operational, boosting central China’s summer power supply capacity

The second generating unit of Hubei Energy Jiangling Power Plant has officially entered commercial operation after successfully completing a 168-hour full-load trial run on July 24. The milestone marks the full commissioning of the plant’s two 660,000-kilowatt ultra-supercritical double-reheat thermal power units, delivering solid support for peak summer power supply and balanced electricity supply and demand across Hubei and the broader Jianghan Plain region.

As a key project under China’s 14th Five-Year Plan modern energy system framework, the facility stands as the first newly completed power station in Hubei during the 15th Five-Year Plan period. Boasting a total installed capacity of 1.32 million kilowatts, the plant is designed to generate nearly 6 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity annually, capable of meeting the power demand of more than 2 million urban and rural households for daily production and residential consumption.

Jiangling Power Plant is the first coal-fired power facility in Hubei to adopt advanced 660,000-kilowatt ultra-supercritical double-reheat technology. Equipped with an integrated ultra-low-load stable combustion design, the units can operate steadily at a load rate as low as 20 percent, 10 percentage points lower than the 30 percent peak-regulation floor of conventional thermal power units. The technical upgrade enables flexible load adjustment and strong peak-shaving performance, placing the plant among the new generation of high-efficiency and adjustable coal power facilities in China.

The project features outstanding energy-saving and low-carbon performance. Its designed standard coal consumption for power supply reaches 264.63 grams per kilowatt-hour. Compared with benchmark units of the same capacity, the plant can save approximately 40,000 tons of standard coal and reduce carbon dioxide emissions by nearly 110,000 tons every year, effectively advancing the clean and low-carbon transformation of regional coal power.

Strategically positioned at the intersection of the Haoji Railway and the Yangtze River golden waterway, the plant serves as a vital transportation hub power station in central China. Adjacent to Jingzhou Coal Port, the largest coal multimodal transport hub in central China, the facility adopts an integrated fuel supply model featuring port coal storage and special line transportation. Dedicated coal conveying corridors realise point-to-point fuel delivery, greatly enhancing the stability and economic efficiency of coal supply for power generation.

The full launch of Jiangling Power Plant will further optimise the power structure and grid regulation capacity of central China. Its flexible peak regulation capability and eco-friendly operational standards will continuously support stable power guarantee and green energy development across the region in subsequent operational cycles.
