State Grid Accelerates Technological Innovation to Boost New Quality Productive Forces in the 15th Five-Year Plan

In the first year of the 15th Five-Year Plan, State Grid Corporation of China has firmly grasped the requirements for developing new quality productive forces, seized historical opportunities, strengthened original innovation and key core technology research, accelerated the efficient transformation and application of scientific and technological achievements, and strived to build a globally influential source of original technologies.

The 15th Five-Year Plan period is a critical stage for the construction of a new power system, with many areas of power science and technology entering uncharted territory. State Grid has seized the opportunities of the new round of technological revolution, focused on the frontier of global energy science and technology, and strengthened basic research and original innovation capabilities to accelerate breakthroughs in basic theories and key core technologies. It has also stepped up the construction of pilot test and simulation platforms, and concentrated efforts on major technological research and engineering verification in key areas to form systematic engineering solutions, promoting the cultivation and development of new quality productive forces in the energy and power sector.

As the proportion of new energy in the power system continues to rise, enabling new energy—reliable on weather conditions—to proactively support the stable operation of the power grid has become a current research focus. Recently, China Electric Power Research Institute (CEPRI) made breakthroughs in the field of new energy active support control, successfully building a multi-level rapid collaborative active control system of "generator-field-grid" to ensure the safety of grid frequency and voltage.

On May 11, research teams focused on tackling difficulties in the grid’s active support for energy transition under the "dual carbon" goal. Since 2018, the team has launched a special research project and formulated a 10-year, six-phase long-term technical plan, which is now advancing efficiently. On April 29, the State Grid Economic and Technological Research Institute took the lead in completing a special test for AC fault ride-through of the receiving-end converter station of the Gansu-Zhejiang ±800 kV UHV DC transmission project, a world-first project adopting flexible DC technology at both sending and receiving ends.

State Grid has actively accelerated the transformation and application of scientific and technological achievements, implemented the "Artificial Intelligence +" initiative, and strengthened cooperation with top domestic scientific research forces. On May 7, a national first-of-its-kind major technological equipment was put into demonstration application in Shandong, realizing real-time high-precision monitoring and early warning of 800,000 kilowatts of clean energy from five new energy power stations.

In Fujian, a self-developed offshore wind power prediction system has completed application verification, while in Anhui, the first domestic electric power quantum standardization technical committee was established to promote the industrialization of innovative achievements. State Grid also focuses on the power demand of new quality productive force enterprises, strengthening power supply guarantee, improving power quality and service quality.

In Jiangsu, power supply companies have tested key equipment to improve power quality for new energy-related enterprises, and sorted out a list of power quality-sensitive users to enhance distribution network fault self-healing capabilities. In Shanghai, a digital twin smart power guarantee platform has been built for semiconductor enterprises, providing real-time monitoring and hidden danger early warning. These measures will further consolidate China’s leading position in power technology and support the high-quality development of new quality productive forces.
