World’s First 24,000 TEU Methanol Dual-Fuel Container Ship Named “Oriental Wisdom” in China
China COSCO Shipping Group officially named the world’s first 24,000 TEU methanol dual-fuel container ship “Oriental Wisdom” in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, on May 8. As the largest methanol dual-fuel container ship globally to date, the vessel marks a significant breakthrough in China’s shipbuilding industry and provides a practical solution for the global shipping sector’s decarbonisation drive.
CCTV.com reports that methanol as a marine fuel has emerged as a reliable choice for reducing shipping emissions, with its application gradually gaining traction in the global maritime industry. The “Oriental Wisdom” ship sets new benchmarks for similar vessel types worldwide, boasting outstanding dimensions and performance indicators. It has an overall length of 399.99 meters, a width of 61.3 meters and a depth of 33.2 meters, with a maximum container capacity of 24,168 TEU and a deadweight of 225,000 tons, operating at a service speed of 22.7 knots.

The core breakthrough of the “Oriental Wisdom” lies in its world-leading methanol dual-fuel power system, which is the largest of its kind globally. Equipped with the world’s biggest methanol dual-fuel main engine, auxiliary engine and boiler, the vessel can flexibly switch between methanol and traditional fuel modes, adapting to different operational needs and fuel supply conditions.
People’s Network notes that green methanol, as a clean alternative fuel, plays a crucial role in cutting maritime carbon emissions. When using green methanol, the “Oriental Wisdom” can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 150,000 tons per year, nearly eliminate sulfur oxide emissions and significantly reduce nitrogen oxide emissions. These environmental advantages fully meet the urgent global demand for shipping decarbonisation and emission reduction, aligning with the global trend of energy conservation and environmental protection.
Currently, the “Oriental Wisdom” is on the verge of commencing sea trials. The trials will test the performance of its dual-fuel power system, navigation stability and environmental protection indicators, laying a solid foundation for its subsequent formal commissioning and operation.
The launch of the “Oriental Wisdom” not only showcases China’s advanced shipbuilding technology and strength but also provides strong support for the global shipping industry’s transition towards green and low-carbon development. In the future, with the mature application of methanol dual-fuel technology, more such green vessels are expected to be built and put into operation, promoting the sustainable development of the global maritime industry and contributing to global carbon neutrality goals.
