Chongqing Expressway Group Leads High-Quality Development with Digital, Green and Innovative Drive

Construction sites bustle with cranes and machinery, drones patrol the sky at dawn, and Tesla V4 super charging piles stand in neat rows at service areas. Chongqing Expressway Group is accelerating its high-quality development in building a modern new Chongqing, transforming from traditional infrastructure to new infrastructure and from labor-driven to digital intelligence-driven operations.

In the first quarter of 2026, the group achieved steady progress with an investment of 7.585 billion yuan. The achievement is not merely a scale expansion, but a profound transformation featuring greenization, intellectualization and innovation. China Daily reported that the group has been accelerating the construction of a new digital transportation highland to contribute more wisdom and strength to building a transportation power.

Digital intelligence is forging the "brain" of smart expressways. An independently developed intelligent decision-making application scenario for mountainous expressways has been selected as a typical AI application case in Chongqing in 2025. It has raised the accuracy of abnormal event recognition to 98.3%, shortened the average response time from 15 minutes to 8 minutes, and increased the traffic capacity of congested sections by 43.6%.

To address the pain points of blind signal areas and low manual inspection efficiency in mountainous areas, the group has deployed more than 30 drone hangars along over 300 kilometers of expressways. China News Service noted that the drones have flown more than 5,000 sorties, detected over 120 hidden dangers and replaced more than 20,000 kilometers of high-risk manual operations, forming a three-dimensional monitoring system.

Innovation is driving breakthroughs in key technologies. In the first quarter, the group secured 10 new government research projects, applied for 6 Chongqing Science and Technology Progress Awards, and obtained 9 new patents. Major projects such as the Jinyun Mountain Tunnel and Jishan Tunnel are adopting advanced mechanized construction and intelligent technologies, moving steadily towards completion targets in 2027 and 2028 respectively.

Prefabricated construction technology is also thriving. The North Ring Interchange renovation project, the first full prefabricated project in Chongqing, has an assembly rate of 92.5%, improving construction efficiency by over 30% and reducing steel usage by more than 30%. It is expected to be put into use in 2027, significantly improving traffic efficiency.

Green transformation is painting a low-carbon development background. On March 28, the group, in cooperation with Tesla, put 55 super charging stations with 212 V4 super charging piles into operation, covering 55 service areas and 10 national expressways. China Economic Net reported that as of the end of March, the group had built 1,986 high-power charging guns above 250kW, ranking second in quantity and first in proportion nationwide.

The group is also advancing distributed photovoltaic projects, with 3.4MW added in the first quarter and a plan to build 10MW annually. Ten heavy-duty truck charging and swapping stations are scheduled to start construction in mid-May and be put into use in October, facilitating the electrification of logistics transportation.

Looking ahead, Chongqing Expressway Group will further deepen digital transformation, strengthen innovation-driven development and enhance green development. It will continue to promote technological breakthroughs and infrastructure optimization, striving to write a brilliant chapter in building a transportation power and bringing people a better travel experience.
