China’s 2026 Film Box Office Surpasses 12 Billion Yuan, Qingming Festival Slot Boasts Diverse Offerings
Data from online platforms shows that as of April 3, the total box office of Chinese films in 2026 (including pre-sales) has exceeded 12 billion yuan, reflecting a vibrant recovery and steady development of the country’s film market. Amid a blooming variety of film genres, China’s film market is gradually transforming from a mere “box office powerhouse” to a “main venue” in the global film industry, according to China News Network.
The spring film market this year has witnessed a diverse range of Chinese and foreign films of different scales and themes, catering to varied audience demands. Statistics from online platforms indicate that nearly 40% of the currently screening films have a rating of 8.0 or above, a figure far higher than the same period in previous years. Notably, artistic films and documentaries are among these high-rated works, showing that audiences are no longer solely drawn to celebrity appeal or big IPs, and word-of-mouth has become a key factor influencing box office trends.

With the upcoming Qingming Festival holiday, nearly 20 films are set to hit cinemas during the Qingming Festival slot, covering genres such as revolutionary history, warm realism and suspense thriller, providing audiences with a rich array of viewing choices. Among them, several key films have attracted widespread attention for their distinctive themes and strong casts.
“I, Xu Ke”, a realistic family comedy directed by Yang Lina and starring Wen Qi and Qin Hailu, focuses on the contemporary mother-daughter relationship and breaks away from traditional family narrative stereotypes. It tells the story of Xu Ke, a post-00s girl, whose plans are disrupted by the sudden arrival of her dominant mother Hu Chunrong when she is about to undergo gynecological surgery. The two generations of women clash fiercely over life concepts and personal boundaries, and the daughter initiates a “reverse education” model, unlocking a new possibility for their relationship with the gentle declaration “I allow you to live your menopause like adolescence”.
Produced by Ning Hao, directed by Xiao Luxi and starring Ma Sichun, Bai Ke and Huang Minghao, “Oh My Mom” is a warm light comedy. It follows Zhang Shiyi, a rebellious teenager raised solely by his father after his mother’s early death, who accidentally finds his mother Dong Yu’s old diary on his 18th birthday and embarks on a journey to “know his mother”. By witnessing his mother’s vivid and passionate youth, Zhang gradually understands the maternal love that has never been absent and completes a mutually healing growth transformation.
“Genius Game”, directed by Cheng Liang and starring Peng Yuchang and Ding Yuxi, tells the story of Liu Quanlong, a gifted teenager who is selected by wealthy young man Chen Lun and forced to participate in a tempting “identity swap” game. With a luxurious life within reach on one side and an inescapable real cage on the other, the suspense of who is controlling whom will be revealed on April 4.
In addition to these key works, other films including “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”, “North of the Tropic of Cancer”, “Like Father, Like Mother”, “Butterfly Building·Horror” and “Midnight Elevator” will also be released during the Qingming Festival slot, further enriching audience choices. The diverse and high-quality film lineup not only reflects the continuous maturity of China’s film industry but also underscores the market’s transformation towards quality-oriented development, solidifying its status as a key player in the global film landscape.
