Guangzhou’s First Ultra-Large Shield Tunnel Opens to Traffic

Guangzhou’s first ultra-large-diameter shield tunnel, the Haizhuwan Tunnel, recently opened for trial operation, allowing a 15-minute direct connection between the city center and Guangzhou South Railway Station.

Designed by China Railway Siyuan Survey and Design Group Co., Ltd. and constructed by China Railway 14th Bureau Group Corporation Limited, the tunnel is 4.35 kilometers long, with six lanes and a speed limit of 60 km/h. The shield section stretches 2,102 meters, with a maximum excavation diameter of 15.07 meters.

The tunnel’s opening significantly reduces travel time from the Haizhu and Yuexiu districts to Guangzhou South Railway Station, greatly enhancing the station’s passenger distribution capacity. It reinforces the station’s role as a core transportation hub and further strengthens Guangzhou’s position as an international integrated transport center while boosting infrastructure connectivity across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.

Additionally, as a key component of Guangzhou’s transport network, the tunnel facilitated efficient connections between major venues and transport hubs during the 15th National Games, contributing to the event’s success across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area.
